What I'm really dealing with here is a slump. While it is MOST DEFINITELY work-induced, it still has to go. Seriously, I need readerly sustenance. So how am I going to bust this significantly horrible slump?
1. All obligations are off. Except that TLC tour on the 24th.
2. All concern for reading anything literary fiction is gone.
3. Books I own??? Who cares!
After months of lusting from afar after A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, I finally took the plunge and downloaded it to my Nook. I've seen scads of positive reviews of this one, and some have even described it to me--for better or worse--as Twilight for adults. That could go either way, we'll see.
Nonetheless, I am taken with the premise and I'm especially keen on the academic bent that's included. However, I am slightly scared by the fact that it reminds me of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe right here in the beginning. I was only so-so about that one, so hopefully Discovery of Witches will thrill and delight me a bit more.
I'm only a few chapters in, but this one is definitely going to be a quick read and that's probably exactly what I need to get my reading mojo going again.
Have you slumped lately? What got you out of it?

I am kind of in a slump right now... I have only finished a graphic novel all week. I hope you enjoy A Discovery of Witches!
ReplyDeleteI hope you slump lifts soon, Kelly! Sucky feeling, I know. :)
Deleteooh, i have heard such good things! maybe that should be my next one, too...
ReplyDeleteWould love to hear your thoughts on it if you tackle it, Alysa! I had big plans to read last night, but by the time the kiddo went to bed it was all I could do to take a shower and keep my eyes open. Oy!
DeleteI'm in a slump, too. I think some fun YA might get me going. I just need to get myself to the library!
ReplyDeleteYes you do, MJ! I haven't read any YA in a long time (not successfully anyway). Maybe one day. lol
DeleteMy sister loved the book. I hope it does the trick for you.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kathy! I hope so, too!
DeleteI'm definitely pro read-whatever-you-want-and-to-hell-with-obligations! Be sure to let us know what you think of Discovery of Witches. I keep hearing good things about it.
ReplyDeleteI will most definitely keep you posted, Emily. I had no idea when I took this gig that it was going to eat my life. In a good way, I suppose, but still! I need to carve out the reading time fo'sho.
DeleteI liked this one too - and I actually really liked how thorough it was with the history of alchemy ... although it does get a bit long-winded at time. I hope this brings you out of the slump - selfishly, because I like seeing what you're reading here.
ReplyDeleteTanya Patrice, I'm glad to hear that it goes into that history of alchemy. I love stuff like that and it will likely make the book very interesting for me. And I miss sharing what I'm reading!!! Very much.
DeleteYea! Can't wait to see what you think. There were parts that made me twitch a bit (you can see my review after you read if interested), but overall, it was a really fun read.
ReplyDeleteJenn, I will definitely check out your review. I have a feeling I will also be twitchy in parts, but hopefully those are few and far between. We'll see. :D
DeleteI'm glad you are coming out of your slump, it happens to me every now and again and usually I need a really trashy book as a cure! I loved Discovery of Witches until that last 100 or so pages so I can't wait to see what you think of it.
ReplyDeleteSam, I'm intrigued!! I'll let you know what I think. :)
DeleteNoooo, it's a BETTER Twilight for adults. And you will totally squee the academic setting. It kind of reminded me of The Historian as well. Can't wait for the next one.
ReplyDeleteHope this breaks the slumps back!
LOL, I trust you! Now I need to really dig into it.
ReplyDeleteI remember Deliverance Dane. I never did finish that one. The main character of Discovery of Witches has some obvious flaws but you'll probably enjoy it. Happy reading.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what I do when I'm in a reading slump! I throw everything that I was planning on reading to the side but usually I dive into a mystery of some sort. This book has been on my radar for awhile now especially since I heard the sequel is coming out soon. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI loved this book! Even if the word sparkling was used.
ReplyDeleteI just read Le Road Trip yesterday. It's a beautifully illustrated book on traveling through France. Evidently, I needed lots of pictures to help me work through my slump.
I slumped a while back... but audio always seems to work so dropped the books and "audio'd" up for a while.
ReplyDeleteI hope you love Discovery of Witches! I have a copy that I got during the Borders Going Out of Business sale (sob!) but still haven't read it. Will look forward to your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been in a slump for a while. Really, I'm on such a roll that I can't review fast enough. There's obviously good and bad to that, as well, but I'm really enjoying it while it lasts. My slump busters are usually YA or anything really short. :)
oh i've definitely been in slumps before. i'm always asking myself how can i be in a room filled to the brim with books and complain that i have nothing to read? because thats what i feel like all the time as soon as i finish a book. i never know what book to grab next and then i feel like i'm in a slump because i start and stop reading ten books before i find one that i can really settle into.
ReplyDeleteI hate reading slumps because I just want to find that book that will get me out of it. Reading slumps stress me out! I have this one on my wish list.
